Biography :
Therese Oulton is a significant contributor to the great and phenomenal development of abstract painting in Britain. Oulton’s large canvases suggest a Romantic feeling for landscape, with their rich colours, seductive textures and often dramatic impact. The complex traceries of paint seem to suggest rock and plant formations, though Oulton has said that her intention is to distance traditional painterly elements such as form, light and colour from their usual descriptive role. She studied at St. Martins School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1984. Her Diploma show made an impression which soon led to widespread appearances in mixed exhibitions in Britain and abroad. She was given a solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils and was then taken on by Marlborough Fine Art. The Arts Council holds two of her works, Dispossessed, 1983, and Counterfoil, 1987. She was shortlisted for the Turner prize, 1987.
